Docker packages apps as images and runs them in isolated containers sharing the host kernel—repeatable builds, portable dev/prod parity, and a standard OCI artifact for registries. Compose stacks local dependencies (Postgres, Redis, brokers); in production you usually orchestrate many containers with Kubernetes. It is the baseline skill under most modern DevOps workflows.
